Making some Facebook changes

As online networks like Facebook become increasingly integrated into daily life, I've decided that it's time to make some changes in the realm of security and privacy. I've decided to lock down my personal Facebook account - limiting it to family, friends and associates that I've either known in person, interacted online with on a regular basis, or come as a trusted recommendation. As my friend list grows, I'm finding it becoming a little restrictive in what type of information I feel comfortable sharing due to the presence of those I don't know. To me, that defeats the original purpose of how using Facebook was intended. So, I will be making the delicate and uncomfortable task of trimming down my friend list to those who meet the above criteria.

That being said, I don't want to completely shut out those who wish to 'network' with me on Facebook. I appreciate the interaction - and as a way to demonstrate that, I have created a 'fan' page on Facebook for stormhighway.com that will serve as my public communications for all things storm chasing and weather related. All of the Facebook links on this site now point to the fan page.

The fan page works almost identically to my personal Facebook page in that when you become a fan, you'll be able to see the updates, photos and links that I post; as well as comment and discuss on those items. This is a 'win-win' because it allows me to keep a measure of privacy on the more personal information I share on my primary account, while not shutting out everyone.

For the vast majority of my Facebook friends, you likely fit into the criteria of my first paragraph. For those that find themselves removed from my friend list, please don't take it personally. It's nothing you did or said. In fact I share some of the blame for the awkwardness of the situation from blindly accepting the request originally. If you're in the latter category, I do appreciate your interaction and hope that you will continue to 'network' with me through my fan page.
